Shingle roofing in Star: what's actually different here

Star is one of the newer growth stories in the Treasure Valley — most of the housing between Old Town Star and the subdivisions filling in toward Eagle and Middleton went up well after the valley's big 1990s and 2000s boom, so this isn't a town where we're mostly chasing 25-year-old shingle roofs. That actually shifts the conversation here: instead of replacement timing, the bigger question for Star homeowners is whether the shingle that went on their newer home is holding up the way it should against hail and wind, and whether a repair or a targeted upgrade to a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle makes more sense than waiting for the original roof to fail outright.

Star sits close enough to the Boise River that storm cells moving through the valley during hail season, typically May through August and heaviest in June and July, hit it about as hard as anywhere else in the metro. A newer roof isn't immune to that — hail strips granules off asphalt shingles regardless of the roof's age, exposing the mat underneath to direct sun, and that kind of damage is easy to miss from the ground around Star Riverwalk Park or Hunter's Creek Sports Complex because the shingle still looks intact from a distance. Homeowners with a roof less than ten years old are sometimes the most surprised to learn they have hail damage, simply because it doesn't occur to them to look.

Star's proximity to the Boise River also means some homes, especially those with shade from riverside trees, see earlier algae or moss growth on north-facing slopes than homes out in the open. And since there's no ice-barrier underlayment requirement at the eave within Boise-area city limits under the standard 25 psf snow load, even a newer shingle roof can be vulnerable to ice-dam backup during a hard freeze-thaw stretch if the eave wasn't detailed carefully at installation.
